I have previously written about that you have to remember to backup , and the other day I found out that I had not translated the follow-up post where I tell what I do.
When I import images into Lightroom from my memory, I choose always to backup to a secondary destination (on my server). And I never postpone the weekly automatic backup in Lightroom, in previous versions of Lightroom it happened when we started Lightroom, but in version 3, it is when you close Lightroom. I think it's very important to have a backup of all the changes I've made or I'll just edit all my pictures again.
But even though I have copies of my stuff on two machines, I've been looking for an online backup solution. But here in Denmark I only found one - Keepit Keepit Unlimited and Pro Unlimited Pro for workstations and servers. Pro can be installed on servers, but you have to pay per. GB data is being backed up.
Keepit Unlimited costs 468 kroner per year, and if I want Keepit Pro to backup my 250GB in the cellar would cost 8985 kr. years, so the total price of £ 9463 would both my workstation and my server being secured.
But then I read a post on LIGHTING ESSENTIALS Don Giannatti where he referred to a product called Carbonite, which I wanted to try. First on my work computer it worked fine, I could choose the folders or files that I wanted to backup directly in Windows Explorer, and it grabbed not all my bandwidth. So I installed it on my server, just to see if it would work. And it did - No more "This can not be installed on a server that you have to buy the expensive version.", It just played.
And best of all is the price. One year costs $ 54.95 and $ 99.95 two years, it is equivalent to 300/550 kr So for my machines will cost £ 1100 for 2 years backup of both my server and my job in two years. Had I chosen Keepit Unlimited to my work computer and their Pro product to my server it would have cost me 17970, - Euro
You can test the software for 15 days free and you do not even need to register your credit card. If you decide to buy it before the 15 days are over, those days will be added to your registration period.
As an option, I can actually access my files remotely via the Remote Access menu when I log on Carbonite website. It is not to retrieve all folders. But if you just need a particular file, you can access it anywhere in the world. And there is an iPhone application that gives me access all my files on my phone, so in a pinch, I have access to my stuff.
So if you want to try this product, and simultaneously will support me, can you throw a comment, so I send you an email via Carbonite - And if you choose to sign up I get 3 months free Carbonite.
